Survey on digital preservation networks 2026

Invitation to fill in the questionnaire „nestor Survey on digital preservation networks 2026“

  • Aim and Purpose of the Survey

This survey is the second follow-up survey that aims at augmenting transparency and knowledge about communities being active in the field of digital preservation. We publish all data anonymized and evaluated as a study in PDF format. Furthermore only the data from institutions that agree, will be published as “nestor Community Profiles” (pdf-files) and will be used as content for the “Digital Preservation Community Search” (database with a search functionality).

  • The Survey and how you can prepare your entries for the online form

The survey contains 40 questions. Completing the online questionnaire will take approximately 20 to 25 minutes.

For your convenience we created a pdf-file that you can use as a sort of preview of the survey form. It’s linked here https://wiki.dnb.de/x/46nqE

In the course of the previous survey, many communities have agreed to the publication of their profiles on the nestor website (see nestor - nestor Community Survey please scroll to the bottom). These communities can check whether they need to update their data for the 2026 survey or enter it as it is.
Please bear in mind that we require only one complete questionnaire per community / network. Please communicate this to your network and ensure, that only one questionnaire is submitted as the “official” version from your community.

  • Who conducts the Survey?

The survey is conducted by nestor e.V. c/o German National Library, the German-speaking network for digital preservation and its Community Survey WG consisting of the following institutions:

  • Which data will be published?

Any data you enter will only be published anonymously on the internet. Institutions that wish to participate in the “nestor Community Profiles” and the new “Digital Preservation Community Search” can express their interest at the end of the questionnaire.

  • How long will these data be stored and published?

The anonymized data will be used permanently for the above-mentioned purposes. Data concerning the institutions in the “nestor Community Profiles” and the “Digital Preservation Community Search” will remain permanently in open access, unless you request its withdrawal. Data relating to individuals (contact details) will be deleted after five years or earlier if updates render the data invalid.
